🌞 Whether you’re planning a beach escape, a cultural holiday, or a quiet retreat, Roquetas de Mar and the wider Almería province offer a rich variety of experiences year-round. We know most of the people always talk about the beaches and tapas trails, but we figure with this seasonal guide we'll highlight some of the lesser-known events, natural wonders, and local quirks that make each time of year unique—perfect for guests staying with us at Villa de los Osos.

🌸 Spring (March to May): Blossoms, Birdsong & Festivals in Bloom

Weather

Spring in Roquetas is a great time of the year for families looking to get away for some serious R&R. Temperatures range from 17°C in March to 24°C by late May, with minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine. Mornings are fresh, afternoons are warm, and the sea starts warming up for brave swimmers. Personally, I don't find it too cold, but I know my wife won't set foot in the sea during this time of year.

Fiestas de San Marcos (April – nearby El Ejido)

A countryside celebration with horseback processions, traditional food, and flamenco. Ideal for immersing yourself in rural Andalusian traditions.

Almería en Corto – International Short Film Festival (Late May)

The Amlería en Corto International Short Film Festival is a true cinematic treat for indie film lovers like us, this lesser-known cultural gem celebrates local and international filmmakers.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Activities

Birdwatching in Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata

Just 45 minutes from Roquetas, this protected area comes alive in spring with flamingos, herons, and migratory species. Bring binoculars and enjoy the salty serenity.

Cycling the Green Pathways (Vías Verdes)

The old mining railway trails around Lucainena de las Torres are lush and blooming. Rent a bike and explore old tunnels and iron bridges draped in wildflowers.

⭐️ Local Tip: Visit the Huerto de las Palmeras, a small oasis nursery in Níjar, for organic herbs and Andalusian gardening tips.

Weather

Hot, dry, and gloriously sunny. Daytime highs regularly hit 30–35°C, and even +40°C at times, but the sea breeze and participating in the Spanish tradition of siestas (which we LOVE) mid-day keeps things bearable. Long daylight hours (until nearly 10 PM!) let you make the most of every moment.

Noche de San Juan (June 23rd)

Celebrate the summer solstice on the beach with bonfires, fireworks, and ocean dips at midnight. Roquetas locals light fires to “burn away” bad energy—an unforgettable tradition.

Festival de Teatro de El Ejido (Early Summer)

The Festival de Teatro de El Ejido is truly an amazing festival not to be missed!

A surprisingly edgy and entertaining theatre and street art festival. If you’re in town, don’t miss the pop-up performances in plazas.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Activities

Snorkeling in Cala de San Pedro

Only accessible by boat or a long hike, this hidden cove near Las Negras is a nudist-friendly, bohemian spot with crystal waters and DIY driftwood huts. Bring supplies—you’ll want to linger.

Evening hikes in Enix or Felix

These two sleepy hill towns above Roquetas offer spectacular golden hour views and cooler temperatures for twilight strolls.

⭐️ Local Tip: Skip the main promenade and head to the Playa de Cerrillos, a wilder beach popular with locals and kite surfers, tucked inside the Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Park.

🍁 Autumn (September to November): Golden Skies & Local Harvests

Weather

By far, this is our favourite time of year as the fall is milder than summer but still beach-worthy. Expect highs around 28°C in early September, tapering to 19–22°C by November. The sea remains swimmable well into October.

Feria de Almería (Late August into early September)

As far as fairs go, the Feria de Almería is one the whole family will love!

While technically still summer, this city-wide fair spills into early autumn. Think fairground rides, dancing horses, concerts, and churros.

Jornadas Gastronómicas del Tomate (October – La Cañada)

Celebrate Almería’s rich agricultural roots with tomato tastings, cooking demos, and farm-to-table tours. A delight for foodies.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Activities

Olive Oil Tasting in Tabernas

Join a private tour at a small family-owned almazara (olive oil mill) to sample some of Spain’s most underrated EVOO. Autumn is the ideal time to see early harvests.

Rambling in the Desert of Tabernas

With the intense summer heat gone, now is the time to explore the only true desert in Europe. Don’t miss the eerie Mini Hollywood film set tours.

⭐️ Local Tip: Book a table at La Gruta, a restaurant carved into a cliffside cave between Roquetas and Almería. Fewer crowds this time of year means you’ll enjoy a more relaxed experience.

The true beauty of Roquetas de Mar and Almería is that it's well known to be one of the warmest winter destinations in mainland Europe. Average highs hover around 16–20°C, with cooler nights. Rain is rare, and many days are clear and bright—perfect for outdoor adventuring.

Día de Reyes (January 6th)

While Christmas is quiet, Three Kings Day is a big deal in Spain. Roquetas hosts an annual parade (Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos) complete with floats, sweets, and music.

Ruta de Belenes (December–January)

Hunt for elaborate nativity scenes across Almería’s churches and public buildings. Some are life-sized and beautifully detailed.
